10 Christmas Activities for Small Children

Looking for fun activities for your family during the Christmas holidays? Amelia Cunningham has some fantastic ideas for festive activities…

We are now in the final month of the year which means only one thing, Christmas is coming! It’s not just the older children that are wowed by all the magic and excitement, babies and toddlers can be a part of it all too. Whether it’s crafts, sensory play, or outdoor activities, using the weeks leading up to the big day will get you in the spirit- guaranteed! This month add these 10 fun and easy activities to your Christmas to-do list and let the magic begin…

VISIT SANTA

Bring Christmas to life and take your little one on a trip to visit the man himself. Usually found at your local shopping centre or garden centre, Santa will be there to greet your family with Christmas cheer. Whether they laugh or cry, snap a memorable shot of your little one with Santa for the memory bank!

MAKE DIY GIFT WRAP

Put your own stamp on Christmas wrapping paper this year and let your little ones go wild! All you will need is a big roll of brown paper and some red and green paint. Kids will love getting creative and you will be left with one of a kind gift wrap, made with love.

TAKE A WALK OR DRIVE TO SEE THE LIGHTS

You may have seen your local town’s big light switch on, but the magic doesn’t have to stop there. Take a walk or drive to a street where all the homes are lit up for an up-close festive display.

PAINT CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Christmas is the perfect excuse to get crafty. Encourage your little ones to create their own bauble designs and paint them however they wish! Simply grab plain gold or silver baubles, paints/glitter of your choice and have fun!

GIVE YOUR KIDS THEIR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

The perfect place for their newly painted baubles would be on their very own mini Christmas tree. Choose a mini christmas tree for you little one to have in their own room and they will have endless fun taking the baubles on and off (while keeping your own big tree in tact!)

MAKE A CHRISTMAS SENSORY BOARD

Making a Christmas sensory board is a super fun and easy way for your child to get hands on with the festivities. You will need a foam board, some glue (glue gun) and lots of favourite Christmassy things to touch. Ideas – Tinsel, pine cones (which you could have fun picking fresh), soft and fury Santa’s hat with bell, Christmassy feathers! Simply stick the items onto the foam board!

LIGHT PLAY

Using a safe jar made of thick plastic, simply place lights inside (ones that don’t heat up). Babies and toddlers will love looking at all the pretty, sparkling lights when its dark.

CHRISTMAS BOOK COUNTDOWN

Wrap up a new Christmas book each day in the lead up to Christmas day. You can head to your local charity shops and dig out bargain Christmas books. Your child will really enjoy opening a new book each day!

TAKE YOUR CHILD TO A CERAMIC CAFE

Taking your child to a ceramic cafe could be the perfect activity to do which involves going out but is also indoors, especially if it’s a grey day! The ceramic/pottery cafe will most probably have festive activities to get your little one really creative in the lead up to Christmas!

CHRISTMAS DRESS UP

Treat your little one to a festive fun character outfit. Whether you choose Rudolph, Elf or Santa himself, play dress up at home or attend a play group/baby class with your little one all dressed up!
